At 49th Apparel we believe in sustainable fashion - producing locally and zero-waste. We already apply this to our new production garments- we use all the left over fabric in other projects or sell it at our studio sales, and whatever is left over gets donated to local quilting charities.
DOING OUR PART - RE-MAKING THE SYSTEM ONE SHIRT AT A TIME
RE-MADE was born when we decided to take this one step further and actually do something with the waste that is produced from the fashion industry. So many thousands of pounds of clothes are thrown out daily - we are doing out part in this cycle and giving new life to cast away clothing in our upcycled sleepwear.
We use ALL the parts of the vintage shirts - nothing goes to waste. The fronts get made into nightshirts, the backs into sleepshorts and the sleeves are used in our the Re-Made Market Dress!
HERE'S HOW WE RE-MAKE A NIGHTSHIRT!
We take a road trip down south to a Toronto graders clothing recycling facility.
The sheer volume of clothing being processed daily is truly unbelievable!
Then we spend a day... or three, inspecting, picking, editing the highest quality vintage shirts we can find.
Shout-out to my son Gabe who always travels south with me to help with this big task!
Pack up and head back north with a van load of shirts.
Back at the workshop each shirt is laundered, reinspected and sorted.
Here's Marilyn sorting and bundling our last haul of 400+ shirts!
DE-CONSTRUCTING - we get out the scissors and seem rippers and carefully take the shirts apart - removing the collars, cutting off the sleeves, backs and fronts.
RE-CONSTRUCTING - using our custom nightshirt patterns we stitch the deconstructed pieces together with new fabric.
And we have the RE-MADE NIGHTSHIRT!
And RE-MADE SLEEP SHORTS too!
And finally, the RE-MADE MARKET DRESS!
